Rita Harriet Wood O’Connell died peacefully in her Fort Collins home on August 18, 2010. She was born on April 23, 1918 on a ranch east of Saratoga, Wyoming to Samuel Sheldon Wood and Zula M.Hull Wood.
Rita spent her early childhood on the family ranch on Cedar Creek. The family moved to Rawlins, WY where Rita attended grade school. After her father’s tragic death, she and two of her brothers lived at the Cathedral Home in Laramie, WY and graduated from high school in Worland, WY in1936.
She married Gerald Patrick O’Connell in 1937. They made their home in Rawlins from 1944-1979. She was office manager for Gay Johnson’s Truck Stop for many years. After retirement they moved to Cordes Lakes, AZ. Rita made her home with her daughter, Kathy, in Fort Collins, CO for the past six years.
Rita loved her Lord, her family and many, many dear friends. Rita was a life-long member of the Neighbors of Woodcraft, the Grey Ladies, Business & Professional Women, active member of the Community Center of Cordes Lakes, the Cordes Lake Community Bible Church and Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fort Collins, CO where she was a member of the LWR Quilters Group and the R & R Group.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, five brothers, her husband, one daughter- in-law and one grandchild.
She is survived by her four children, sons Gerry (Ellen) O’Connell, Robby O’Connell (Judy Dixon) all of Rawlins, David O’Connell (Susan) of Evanston, WY and daughter Kathy O’Connell of Fort Collins, CO. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, August 24, at 11 A.M. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 7755 Greenstone Trail, Fort Collins, Colorado. A committal service is scheduled for 11 A.M., September 18, in Saratoga, WY.
